Both Google and Yahoo now give you the option of otping-out of their ad-targeting programs. They basically track everything you do online and use that information to determine how to advertise to you as you browse. If you think that sounds creepy, you can go here [ Yahoo opt-out | Google opt-out ] and opt-out of the program.
This is a shrewd move by both companies. Lately, Congress has started to show an interest in internet data collection practices, as well as the application of this data. Allowing people to opt-out now (most won’t) will likely satiate the witch-burners in The Capitol before they institute a federally mandated opt-in program (even more wouldn’t) for targeted ads.
